Medical device maker Boston Scientific says a cyberattack has caused a “global disruption” to its operations, knocking out access to internal systems and halting its ability to process and ship customer orders. The company detected the incident on August 25, 2026, and as of its most recent update had not been able to say when systems would be fully restored.
In a statement posted to its corporate news site, Boston Scientific said the incident “impacted access to certain operating systems and business applications, including the ability to process and ship customer orders,” and described a network outage that disrupted broader company operations. The company said it activated its incident response plan as soon as the issue was discovered and brought in outside cybersecurity specialists to help investigate and contain the threat.
“The full scope, nature and impacts of the incident are not yet known,” the company said, adding that it could not yet provide a timeline for restoring the affected systems or estimate the operational and financial impact of the disruption.
What is still unknown
Boston Scientific has not said publicly what type of cyberattack it experienced, and no ransomware group or other threat actor had claimed responsibility as of publication. The company’s statement makes no mention of patient data or patient safety being affected, and there is no public confirmation either way on whether any data was accessed or stolen during the intrusion. Incidents that cause this scale of operational disruption, including halted order processing, do sometimes turn out to also involve data theft, though that connection has not been established in this case.
Boston Scientific filed a report with the US Securities and Exchange Commission disclosing the incident as a material event, a step publicly traded companies are generally required to take when a cybersecurity incident is likely to have a meaningful effect on the business. News of the attack was followed by a decline in the company’s share price, according to CNBC.
Boston Scientific is a large manufacturer of medical devices used in cardiology, endoscopy and several other areas of healthcare, with operations and customers worldwide. A prolonged disruption to its order and shipping systems has the potential to affect hospitals and clinics that depend on a steady supply of its devices, though the company has not detailed which parts of its business have been hit hardest.
